Curacao is located in the Caribbean just in front of the coast of Venezuela and lies in between its sister islands Aruba and Bonaire. The weather is warm and sunny all year round with a temperature of about 28 degrees Celsius with the cooling trade winds which are always blowing from the east. The raining season is from October till February. Usually the showers in this period are short and soon after the sun will shine again.
Willemstad (the capital of Curacao and the Netherlands Antilles) was established in the mid 1600 ‘s by the Dutch West Indies Company. Her buildings have a 17th and 18th century Dutch colonial influence but in time where modified to accommodate the islands climate. They added verandas, porches, shutters and more Caribbean style colors. Willemstad is divided in two parts by the natural port with two bridges in between.
Queen Emma bridge was built in 1888. It has 16 floating pontoons boats that support the “pontoon bridge”. The bridge swings open allowing ships to access the port. A few years back the bridge was totally restored to its old glory and has been placed on the world heritage list. When the Queen Emma bridge is in its open position the pedestrians are transported by a small ferry also called “ponchi”.
Queen Juliana Bridge. The bridge was opened on Queens day April 30 1974 after 10 years of construction. It is one of the highest bridges in the world so that it can accommodate the tall ships that enter the narrow harbor.
